Back when I first started this blog I had a two part post about how metal has been deemed the Devil’s music and how a lot of the gimmick behind metal is Satan and about anti religion lyrics. I also said something about how Christian metal isn’t exactly “Flying off of the shelves”. I was wrong!

While metal is still deemed the Devil’s music there are a lot of Christian metal bands out there that you really wouldn’t know were spiritual if you didn’t read into it. Bands that still fit the metal sound of today, unlike the Christian metal bands of yester-decade, like Stryper. The bible slinging bees are still out there singing their souls out but they aren’t nearly as popular as they were for that short time back in the mid 80’s with hit’s such as Honestly and To Hell With The Devil. But they are still out there spreading the good word with their music.

The modern spiritual bands of today better fit the bill and are more likely to be picked up not because of their lyrics or the message they try to put across without being so obvious, but because their sound is hard and heavy hitting. Bands such as As I lay Dying, Demon Hunter, And The Devil Wears Prada, the scene grows and does not get as much criticism as one may think from the typical hell-raising metal head. Instead they get respect as they should. I’m not a fan of Demon Hunter or Devil Wears Prada, but I love AILD.

You can say what you want about religion, it all has it’s flaws, but you can’t change the fact that these bands are at a solid state in their careers and are not just one offs that don’t fit the bill with the rest. They may not be singing about candle masses and hypocritical religious leaders, but they are bringing what they know to the table and it’s making a bigger impact than one may realize.

A lot of crazy shit has been happening at and around Ozzfest this year, a few deaths at, leaving and going to Ozzfest, But the latest news is that about 83 moshers were arrested by police at a New Jersey Ozzfest. Police apprehended the moshers if they were flailing their arms in a away that looked to be dangerous to others. Would someone please tell the police that mosh-pits are not for catching butterflies and bunny rabbits but rather bloody noses and black eyes. People enter them at their own risk, don’t you guys have some child sex predators to catch or something?

The bible-throwing bumble bees of Stryper are making a new record is anyone cares.

Ladies! You can be a Hell Yeah girl find out more here.

The art work for the upcoming Megadeth Warchest was featured on Reuters giant Times Square display in NYC several times yesterday. Check out a photo of it here.

Metallica Bass player Robert Trujillo say that no previously performed songs will be on the upcoming record.

Phil Anselmo will be placing installments on Down’s myspace site about the band for the fans. You can check out the first installment here

Hatebreed’s new video for the Supremacy song Destroy Everything has become and instant fan favorite on their myspace site. This is one of my favorites too. Supremacy is one of best CD’s to listen to when I work out. Check it out here.

As if Kiss didn’t have enough merchandise out there on the market, a Kiss Rubicks Cube will be coming out. Looks pretty cool.

Moving forward to the eighties, heavy metal spawned many “Satanic” bands into popularity. Venom, Slayer, Merciful Fate, the whole nine. These days there is still a slew of Satanic bands but lets face it, 97% of it is gimmick. The other 3% is those crazy black metal Scandinavian bands; they take their devil music seriously!!

Writing songs these days isn’t easy because after all what is there to write that hasn’t already been written about. If you lived a good life and you don’t want to be a poser you don’t write songs about how hard your life was growing up. If you’re not into politics then you’re not going to write songs about the government and how to “stick it to the man”! What else is there left to write about then either God or Satan. Christian metal isn’t exactly flying off the record store shelves and the days of Stryper are long gone. So who do we turn to? That good ole chap that never turns his back on metal, that’s right, Beelzebub!

We can’t exactly deny one of the core foundations of heavy metal and its what drives the media to point fingers every time some schizoid doesn’t take his meds and slaughters his best friend and then takes his own life. It’s the music! That’s what they say, but we know the truth is bad parenting but who’s going to listen to “long haired devil worshipper” anyway? That’s how heavy metal will always be looked at from the outside.

So, back to the question…Why does evil and metal go hand in hand? Because it does! Are we all going to hell for listening to metal? I guess we’ll find out in the end~

In case you missed Devil Music Part 1.

As we all know when you ask the average person off the street what the first thing they think of when you say the words “Heavy Metal”, they will tell you “Devil Music”. That’s what we expect from the ignorant, but ignorant or not it is what a lot of heavy metal has been based around for a long time.

This didn’t all start with heavy metal contrary to what everyone wants to believe. The devil in music dates far back to the early days of the blues when Robert Johnson a famous short-lived blues musician was rumored to have met the devil at the “crossroads” and sold his soul in return to be a great guitar master.

Hardcore Christian folk would label pretty much anything that wasn’t a hymnal the devils music, pretty much because most music being fun, loud and fast would sooner or later lead to sin of some sort. This is a fact we can’t deny. Oh well, life goes on. Anyway, moving up a few decades…enter Black Sabbath. As we all know, in the late 60’s Black Sabbath was born and pioneered the sound of things to come with dark horror like rock and roll which would soon be coined as heavy metal. They played heavy distorted evil sounding guitar and sang evil things. Oh and had a cool name that was tied darkness to a holy day. Among many other evil doings in rock and roll, it was rumored that the members of Led Zeppelin made a pact with Satan and the fact that Jimmy Paige was intrigued by and studied the work of Aleister Crowley didn’t help the rumor fizzle out any. The Devil was showing his face in hard rock music.

To be continued…
