TESTAMENT is pleased to announce a string of headlining dates this October with Louisiana metallers Soilent Green. The tour includes TESTAMENT’s appearance at the Hammerstein Ballroom on October 9 in New York City, where they will be direct support to headliners Children of Bodom; also special guests, The Black Dahlia Murder and Between The Buried and Me. Guitarist Eric Peterson checked in to discuss the Metal Masters tour and the band’s upcoming US headlining dates: “We just finished the Metal Masters tour, and it was a great tour to be on. Unfortunately, it went by too quick. We got to know everyone towards the end, and it started to feel like family. It’s too bad it had to end so soon, especially after getting to know everyone. Hopefully, the Metal Masters will continue next year in Europe.

“In the meantime, we’re heading to Japan and Australia. The last time we played there in ’06, we promised our fans we’d have a new record out the next time we came around. We kept our promise and we’re excited to get back there and play it for them.

“Once we get back, we’ll be headlining some east coast shows, including a one-off with Children of Bodom at the infamous Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. We’ll have full production, so we’re excited to put on our whole show. This tour is going to focus on secondary markets, so we don’t spoil anything for next year. We plan on having a big year and putting a big package together, wink wink.”

But anyway, that’s cool and good for them because The Formation Of Damnation is a great album. Now if you wonder how they won just take a look at the bands they were up against. Bullet For My Valentine, Children Of Bodom, Down and Atreyu. The only band that in my opinion had a chance is Children Of Bodom, with the release of Blooddrunk.

Riding high on a wave of critical acclaim for their new record, The Formation of Damnation, thrash titans Testament are MTV’s 52/52 Artist Of The Week! For the uninitiated, 52/52 is a way for MTV to shower love on its favorite bands, giving one artist each week over 11 hours of on-air promo time filled with live performances, interviews, skits, and more. For Testament’s appearance, MTV filmed the band’s BB King’s gig in NYC in April, as well as a special performance on Alcatraz in the band’s hometown of San Francisco. I can’t sit here and try to compare it to older or newer Testament records because I don’t have any and I only recently became a fan after buying The Very Best Of Testament. What I can say from listening to that cd is that Formation mixes it up a bit but stays true to form.

Formation starts off with For The Glory Of…a cool heavy groove instrumental that lasts about a minute and 12 seconds and then goes right into More Than Meets The Eye. More than meets the eye is a heavy song with great solos from Skolnick and Peterson and has a short but catchy anthem like “whao-oh-ah-oh”. The Evil Has Landed is about 9/11. The lyrics don’t bounce around and are straight forward. The Formation Of Damnation is just a bad ass song with strong political messages. fast forward to The Persecuted Won’t Forget, a fast chugging, thrash song. Henchmen Ride is an anthem to The Henchmen motorcycle club. Killing Season…a war song from the eyes of a soldier. Afterlife, if I am of mistaken was pretty much a tribute to Eric Peterson late father and what his father taught him and seeing him in the afterlife. The remaining songs are good as well.

Lyrically Formation Of Damnation is not over creative but still get the point across. The guitars keep it heavy and thrashy. Paul Bostaph is an unbelievable drummer and does an amazing job. It’s nice to see a bunch of 40 something year old guys being able to keep their reunite as a well oiled machine as if they didn’t miss a beat. I think most Testament fans old and new will like Formation. 4 for 4 for Formation Of Damnation

Those are just a few that we have to look forward to. Some that have already been released or also released soon are Meshuggah’s new one obZen that comes out tomorrow on Nuclear Blast , Death Angel just released Killing Season, Byzantine put out Oblivion Beckons, a great record right before breaking up and Grief Of War, the Japanese thrashers released their 3 year old debut record for the first time in America on Prosthetic Records. Testament will be releasing their next record The Formation OF Damnation on April 29th. You can hear a song More Than Meets The Eye (No it’s not the Transformers theme song) from The Formation Of Damnation on Thier Official Myspace site. Damn the list goes on and on! Disturbed is releasing a new record this year as well and we are supposed to see a new Slipknot record too. Both of which bands are going to be on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour. Light This City will be back in the studio some time this year. I’m not sure if the new record will be released in ‘08 or not but I’ll be checking on that from time to time. Lastly for all you haters out there, Trivium is supposed to release something new this year as well.

It used to be that a band would take 3 or four years before releasing a new record and often times it would be either well worth the wait or a substandard piece of cat shit. Now days metal bands take two years at the most and release great recording with no filler what so ever. And even between you have side projects from members of the bands that make for great head banging.

So in summary, 2008 is going to be a kick ass year in Metal!

Veteran San Francisco Bay Area metallers Testament have set “The Formation Of Damnation” as the title of their new album, tentatively due in early 2008 via Nuclear Blast Records. the band is currently recording the drums tracks with producer Andy Sneap (Machine Head, Exodus, Arch Enemy, Nevermore) at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California.
