I can understand if they were looking out for the bands, but in all honesty we know that they are just trying to line their pockets.

How many bands like The Sword were never really even heard of until Guitar Hero 2 came out. DragonForce sales soared after Guitar Hero 3 and the band even admits that Guitar Hero 3 is probably what made them bigger. Even some of the older bands have gained new fans from the Guitar Hero games. Some kids never even heard of half the bands on there. After they played them and discovered that they liked them I guarantee they did one of two things. Either illegally downloaded the song of bought it legally.

I have no problems if they try to hit up the video game developers for more money if it is going to the bands, but if it’s just lining the pockets of the assholes at Warner Records then I think it’s B.S.

Warner Music Chief Executive Edgar Bronfman drew comparisons between MTV’s launch 25 years ago or Apple Inc’s iPod launch five years ago, and today’s video game companies like Activision Blizzard Inc and Harmonix, a unit of Viacom Inc.

It’s overwhelming how much great metal 2008 has brought so far, and it’s only bringing more! Here are some of my picks this far into the year and some anticipated stuff.

Favorite 5 Albums of 2008 so far

Testament – The Formation Of Damnation

Children Of Bodom – Blooddrunk

The Sword – Gods Of The Earth

Black Tide Light From Above get’s an honorable mention

Most Anticipated Albums To Come

All That Remains – Overcome

Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone

The Acacia Strain – Continent

Light This City (No title yet)

Best Album that went under the radar

Trivium (No title yet)

I’m really hoping the Metallica album is good, but I have hoped that since 1990. The way Trivium is talking, I don’t know what to think of this upcoming release. I wasn’t a big fan until The Crusade. Call me crazy but it was great to hear a band that actually sound like Metallica should.

Albums that I’m already disappointed by

Judas Priest – Nostradamus

I’ve only heard about half of disc one and I’m really not feeling it…we’ll see. I’ll do a better review of the album later on.

Albums I Refuse to Buy

Disturbed – Indestructible

Not a big fan and the new single annoys the shit outta me!

Best Lesser Known Band

Soldiers Of Scrape

Check ‘em out! Soldiers Of Scrape Myspace

Unsigned Bands that Deserve a good record deal

Absolute Vengeance

Blood Loss

There may be some things I forgot but these are a few that I could think of off of the top of my head. Remember, these are things that I have liked. I’m not discrediting any other bands besides the ones I already did on the list, which was very few. I said it before and I’m saying it again…2008 is a great year for metal.

Torche played at The Sword show the other night and while they didn’t sound all that great on stage due to what I’d like to blame on a bad sound tech and perhaps faulting equipment, I am really diggin the EP I bought.
In Return features 7 songs. None of them over 4 minutes long but every song is a heavy blow to the ear drums. You can check out Torche on the embedded widget below. Some of the tracks on the playlist are off of the In Return EP. Check them out.

You may have noticed that not a whole lot was going on here at Metal Martyr yesterday. There was good reason. I went to see The Sword last night in Raleigh, NC. Let me tell you, if your a fan of The Sword and you have not went to a live show yet, GET THERE!

You may have noticed that not a whole lot was going on here at Metal Martyr yesterday. There was good reason. I went to see The Sword last night in Raleigh, NC. Let me tell you, if your a fan of The Sword and you have not went to a live show yet, GET THERE!

Opening up the show was a band from Philadelphia, Pa called Stinking Lizaveta. They were a three piece band that did mostly instrumental stuff with a dude in his 40’s with a scullet with a little patch in the middle playing guitar and singing a little bit, a woman drummer another guy playing an electric upright Bass guitar. They had a funky garage band sound that was really cool I didn’t get to hear much of them as I was late.

Next up was Torche. A band with members out of Miami and Georgia. They were LOUD! I think they’re sound was all fucked up because you could not hear the vocals and the bass was overwhelming everything…except the drums. The drummer, Rick Smith was beating the living shit outta those skins. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has to change skins every other show. Now they didn’t sound all that good last night but I bought a cd/vinyl on the way out and it sounds great. I blame their sound man for a shitty set up. Anyway they kind of have southern sludge sound to it. Check out their myspace

Now, all bullshit aside. The Sword came on quick and got their stuff set up and just started rockin the place and sounding great. You know those bands that sound just as well live as a studio recording? The Sword is one of those bands. The crowd was diggin every song and every now and then between songs some chum would yell “Freya“, but that’s expected. They did play it at the end and the crowd went ape-shit. These guys put on an awesome live show. Thanks to Sneak Attack Media for getting me there. Check out the pictures below.
