Sometimes you get excited for a newly released cd and love it for the first couple listens. Some are great cds with good sound but then later on you read what others stated in their reviews and second guess your own opinion. Some are great at the first listen but don’t hold a lasting effect that a good cd needs in order to make it a truly good release. Some take some time to sink in before you actually really start to enjoy them and some are immediate favorites. Some leave you wanting more in the manner that the entire CD is great and you want to hear more from the band and some leave you wanting more in the manner that there were only a few good songs and the rest fall really short and feel like fillers. Below are some reviews that I look back at and don’t quite feel the same as I did when I reviewed them and some I still hold firm.

All That Remains – Overcome: This was one of my “Highly Anticipated” releases for 2008. After really enjoying The Fall Of Ideals and This Darkened Heart, I couldn’t wait to see what was next. When the first two singles dropped I really liked them. The sound was a bit different and I couldn’t wait for the album. When I got it I was pretty stoked. I wrote a great review for it and said it surpassed their previous releases. While the album is different from the previous two and is good in it’s own right, it lacks longevity. I wouldn’t call it “uninspired” as many others have, but it It doesn’t having the lasting effect that The Fall Of Ideals has.

The Acacia Strain – Continent: This is another one of those albums that doesn’t have the lasting effect. It’s heavy and brutal, but it lacks the hooks that I feel is necessary to make an album stand the test of time. The vocals and lyrics are great, but a good chorus or breakdown is needed for me to truly appreciate this album. Like The Dead Walk, I really dug it at first listen but it’s easily forgotten within a week or so.

Austrian Death Machine – Total Brutal: Tim Lambesis side project with Ahhnold was fun at first few listens. The music is cool and there are a lot of guest solos in the mix. Paul Raven (From The Critics Den) kind of opened my eyes up a bit more on this album. In his review he states that it is one of those albums that get’s passed around by teenage metalheads and that the novelty of it doesn’t last very long. He was exactly right. It’s a “Solid thrash album”, as he says in the comments of my review but it doesn’t last long and gets thrown in with the stack of things such as Beatallica, the Jerkie Boys and such. Funny, yes. Overwhelmingly wowing…’fraid not.

Soulfly – Conquer: I stated in my review that this is probably Soulfly’s best release ever…and I still feel that way. If you ever plan on getting a Soulfly album then start with this. If you want to reach in to their back catalog, then go for their self titled debut. Everything in between is garbage in my opinion. Conquer brings a thrashier feel to it as if Max and Igor Cavalera Conspiracy release resurrected something inside of him. Let’s not forget that Marc Rizzo is a complete bad-ass guitar player too.

Withered – Folie Circulaire: This one was really tough to get in to. The blackened death metal genre is something I’m fairly new to and if your not totally in to that music then it will either take some time to get used to or it will just not sink in at all. The Funeral Pyre is the same way. Their 2008 release Wounds has that strange effect where it takes some time. Prosthetic Records signs acts that stand out from the rest. That’s where bands like Lamb Of God and All That Remains got their big start. Other bands that made their Prosthetic label debut this year that deserve a listen are Book Of Black Earth with Horoskopus and The Antagonist with Exist.

Children Of Bodom – Blooddrunk: This album seemed to fall short of my expectation upon first listen. I honestly don’t know what I expected of this album considering that I only heard Hate Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead Yet? before I got BloodDrunk. I bought it and the same day immediately after first listen wrote a review saying that it was mediocre. A day or two later I wrote a quick re-review, something I don’t often do. The album grew on me and I was really getting in to it. While it’s still not my favorite COB release it’s a good release nonetheless. After I bought Blooddrunk I went on the search and bought the remaining C.O.B. re-releases of the albums I didn’t have.

Finally Slipknot and Metallica: I loved the old Metallica like a million others have. I’ve also been disappointed like a million others have since the release of Load, Reload and St. Anger. What I expected of Death Magnetic was another over-hyped piece of dog excrement. What we got was a not-so-bad album with a more thrash feel than the previous four Metallica studio album with it’s ups and downs. This album proved that Metallica haven’t totally lost touch with their past, but are still far from re-achieving the expectations of a lot of their hardcore following fans from the beginning. At some points is seems as they are trying too hard and some times it seems they aren’t trying hard enough. Better than expected but still no enough to quench the hunger of a dying Metallica fan. Progress has been made but they might never make another Master Of Puppets and that’s something we all need to live with. To name this as “Album Of The Year” is just plain idiotic.

Slipknot really disappointed me this year. All Hope Is Gone was hyped and hyped some more. The best songs were released as singles and most everything else on the album felt like a rushed filler. We’ve seen a different progression of the band since MFKR, but this one was a giant step sideways instead of forward. Iowa had me wanting more and Vol. 3 made me a happy fan. The Stone Sour releases in between sufficed but All Hope Is Gone made me second guess myself as a fan of this band. I don’t really know if I will anticipate the next one as much as I have in the past. Also I have found so many more bands and releases this year that it was almost easy to forget how much I disliked this record and that makes me feel as if perhaps I’m growing away from Slipknot, which ultimately is not necessarily a bad thing. All Hope Is not Gone, but on more release like this and it may be.

Writing reviews is not as an easy process as some might think. After you have written so quite a few it’s tough to come up with creative ways to say just how “Brutal” or shitty an album really is. For some it comes easy and for others like myself it’s not always a piece of cake. You also have to battle your own feelings sometimes and try not to second guess yourself in fear of drawing a negative response from someone that doesn’t feel the same way about an album. At times you read a comment from someone after you’ve posted a review and it’s get’s you thinking about that album. You go back and you think to yourself, “Damn, they’re right.”. You don’t want to change your mind but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and either say so or just ignore the fact. Some albums deserve a full track-by-track review and other just need a simple explanation that the album slays. With the Internet it’s fairly easy to find reviews before you buy a cd. Who’s advice you take is solely up to you and your liking. If ever you agree read a review in Rolling Stone Magazine and it says nothing but negative things about the album…chances is are that the album is great. If they say and album is innovative and spectacular…buyer beware.

In almost any case you can mix two genres of metal and make it sound well. Except for Straight Line Stitch, they screw it up terribly. Mixing some genres are fairly easy. Black Metal and Death Metal fuse together pretty well and Book Of Black Earth give us a a tasty helping of it with their October 14th release, Horoskopus on Prosthetic Records.

With a demo, a split and one full length under their belt, Book Of Black Earth take it to the next level with their debut Prosthetic Records release. Book Of Black Earth are a 5 piece out of Seattle, Washington. The line up reads like this: T.J. Cowgill on guitar and vocals, Dav Tafoya on Bass and Vocals, Joe Axler on drums, Hank Guthrie (Not trying to knock the dudes name, but it sounds like a country singer) on keyboards and Tony Lombardi on guitar.

Dark rhythms and doom ridden bridges fill your ears with a black/death metal delight. It’s hard to make out the keyboards in the mix and the snare sounds a bit louder than almost everything else at times. Although its a flat “tinny” sounding snare, it doesn’t sound out of place. production almost sounds a bit staticy, but not in the Death Magnetic way, but in a good way. Over all Horoskopus sounds good. The rhythm doesn’t stay stagnant and it’s a good mix of tempos. Thick, low and heavy and the guitars aren’t overproduced. There are some really good break downs and the only thing that I think would make Horoskopus better is some really good, gut ripping solos.

T.J. Cowgills vocals stand on their own and each song tells a dark story. “Horoskopus is about hidden astrological eliments of the Christian church,” Vacalist/guitarist T.J. Cowgill says. “From it’s origins as a stats sponsored religion in the fourth century to the present day, it has been guided by astrological concepts conceived before Jesus Christ was mythologized as the ‘Sun’ of God”

Book Of Black Earth’s tour starts tonight in their hometown of Seattle and are touring with label-mates Withered and Black Metal veterans Watain during October on the Black Metal Magic Tour. You can hear the track “Funeral of Peace” on their Myspace page.

What? One lousy update yesterday? Yeah, I know. That’s not like me but I had a few things in order that I had to take care of last night. So let’s go over June really quick.

I went to see Dark Tranquility, Divine Heresy, Firewind and Soldiers Of Scrape on the Tyranny And Bloodshred tour…minus the tyranny. That was a bad ass show. I’ll announce the winner of the autographed Bleed The Fifth CD tonight.

Withered’s new album Folie Circulaire came out on the 17th, an extremely heavy and noisy album to say the least, but it’s one of those that just grows on you.

Judas Priesthad as saying Jesus Christ! with Nostradamus While it wasn’t the Priest we know, it was a concept album that I don’t think anyone was really ready for. Great musically, but unlike Priest.

Motley Crue graced us with an album that had me wanting a small part of my life back. That part being the time I spent listening to the Saints Of Los Angeles.

Slipknot released a free single in the title track of their upcoming album All Hope Is Gone. A lot of people are looking forward to the release of the new Album, to include myself. If you want the single now you will have to buy it…or download it from someone else who already has it.

Metallica announced the new titleof their upcoming CD will be Death Magnetic and hopefull it won’t be Crap Magnetic and I did my own spin on it before hand.

TriviumAlso announced the title of their new cd, Shogun…do-mo arigato Mr. Roboto!

Himsa anounced their last show and their disbanding.

Testament won Album Of The Year at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards

Light This City anounced that they are calling it quits and disappoint a shitload of people.

I started adding Metallica vinyl reissues to my collection even though I talk so much trash about them.

I gave a little piece of advice to Artist that try to retaliate against Blabbermouth trash talkers.

I took on a new Blog in The Rock Dose, a rock themed blog. Check It out some time.

I held a voting poll to see what people thought was Metallica’s Best Realease…it was almost scary!

Kiss says they are going to keep the marketing torch a blazing with an all new line-up of band in the future.

Twisted Sister announce they are taking the show to…BROADWAY?

Lastly, Disturbed released Indestructiblewhich sold a crap load of cd’s. I think people were pretty surprised that so many people actually dug them…or maybe it was The Dillinger Escape Plan that bought them all up?

That was about the important stuff that went on this month here. I hate going back through things and finding spelling and typing errors, but hell, I’m only human. I can’t wait to see what July has in store for us. Keep an eye out for a new contest for Metal Martyr’s 1 year anniversary!

The follow up to 2005’s Memento Mori is a very busy recording. The mix between Mike Thompson and Chris Freeman’s vocals compliment each other as do their guitars. A very fast paced, slightly over-distorted recording, Withered’s latest release will have the mosh pits churning like an out of control blender one minute and bring it to a head banging, fist raising halt the next.

Beau Brandon’s drumming is an amazing display of athleticism and rhythm while keeping up with the ridiculously fast pace of guitars at times. That halt of head banging, and fist raising comes with every song. At times I thought the guitars were very over-powering of everything else especially the vocals. The bass guitar of Mike Longoria becomes ever so beautifully present in Gnosis Unveils and the entire album is lyrically genius with guest vocals from Napalm Death’s Barney Greenway on The Fated Breath and Clamor Beneath

With lines such as “How long will I be lost in lies of Sanity? I crave the emptiness of ignorance, the only true faith I’ve know.” from Purification of Ignorance. Or Reveal The Essence Of Suffering’s intro line “Plague of man, for want of purpose. At war with his nature. A useless passion”. It’s amazing.

I have had this in my possession for quite some time because I haven’t really been able to figure out how to explain Folie Circulie in words. It’s also taking me some time to get used to this album. At first I really thought that it wasn’t my thing but the more I have listened to it to try to come up with a review for it, it has grown on me. The only complaint I have is that at times it can be very noisy. By that I mean sometimes the guitars and mix in general can sound a bit distorted volume wise. I would probably like it a lot more if it was a bit cleaner sounding, but that’s just my preference.

Lastly, fans of Necrophobic will enjoy (or not) the cover of Necrophobic’s Into Armegeddon.

WITHERED completes work on forthcoming ‘Folie Circulaire’
Atlanta’s WITHERED have completed work on the band’s forthcoming record, ‘Folie Circulaire,’ which will see a June 24 release through Prosthetic Records.

“Our new record is officially completed and we’re very satisfied,” the band says. “Thanks to everyone involved, some very cool things have fallen into place for this release. Most of you are already aware of Barney Greenway’s (Napalm Death) guest vocal appearance on “…The Fated Breath” and “Clamor Beneath.” As always, his vocals are amazing and can’t wait for everyone to hear them.

“Also, the last song on the album is a cover song called ‘Into Armageddon’ by Necrophobic. If you’re not already a fan of them, you need to be. They’re in our top friends and some of the best black metal to ever come out of Sweden so check them out. Big thanks to them for being very cool about us recording their song and for writing it in the first place.”

“The recording process was grueling but worth every 12 – 16 hour day. Phillip Cope (Kylesa, Baroness, Black Tusk) and the guys at The Jam Room [in Columbia, S.C.) did a great job of keeping us focused and capturing our sound. It really shows on the record. Scott Hull (Visceral Sound, Pig Destroyer) also did a great job with the mastering and sequencing. It’s relentless and we couldn’t be happier. The artwork is also completed. The ‘Folie Circulaire’ cover art can be seen here (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=9134307&blogID=378533149). Paul Romano really delivered for us. It will feature a 12-page booklet and is full of fantastic imagery. It is all very symbolic of the lyrical content and overall feel of the record. We’ll post more images as the release date approaches. Big thanks to Paul for being a great friend and supporter.”

“Okay, here are the facts:

Number of tracks – 10 (eight songs, two interludes)

Length – around 46 minutes

‘Folie Circulaire’ tracklisting:

1) To Embrace. . .

2) . . .The Fated Breath

3) Dichotomy Of Exile

4) Gnosis Unveils. . .

5) . . .The Forsaken Truth

6) Purification Of Ignorance

7) Drawn Black Drapes. . .

. . .Reveal The Essence Of Suffering

9) Clamor Beneath

10) Into Armageddon”

‘Folie Circulaire’ will be the follow-up to 2005’s critically-acclaimed ‘Memento Mori,’ which landed on numerous year-end lists for the band. A demoed version of “Putification of Ignorance,” from the forthcoming album, is available on the band’s MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/withered). Meanwhile, WITHERED has confirmed a handful of tour dates, including two local Atlanta shows with the likes of Meshuggah and Ministry, as well as Javelina, along with the previously announced handful of dates alongside The Ocean and Kylesa on their co-headlining tour, which will also feature WITHERED and Lair of The Minotaur. The band most recently finished a string of dates throughout the South and Southwest on their own.
