In a recent phone interview with 101.5 KFLY in Oregon, Zakk remained relatively calm at first while saying:

“I gotta be honest with ya, the boss is not even giving me a phone call, so I mean, it’s just like, what’s going on over there? Are we doing this thing, are we not doing it? I keep getting asked these questions, I go ‘Call the boss, when he tells you, you call me back’.”

As the conversation progresses, Zakk becomes more and more agitated until he finally explodes into an expletive rich cacophony to the tune of:

“Where I come from, the bottom line is, s*** like this goes down, I swear to Christ, we snap motherf***ers necks and beat the living s*** out of people. It ain’t f***ing cool. So it is what it is. The wife can say what she wants and all this other s***. It ain’t f***ing cool. It’s just like, alright, cool, you want to play tough guy s***? Look me in the eyes, I’ll tell him ‘Meet me in the back f***ing alley, and we’ll get this f***ing s*** on. You gonna f***ing treat me like a dick? F*** you.”

If Zakk hasn’t been contacted at all about his apparent expulsion as Ozzy’s lead guitarist, I can understand his frustration. However, before this recording, there may have been a chance of a reconciliation down the road. I don’t see it now, nor do I call people who bite the heads off of living animals (and pay my bills) out into back alleys. I’m just sayin’.

Listen to the conversation here.

Perhaps that’s a bit of a misleading title, but I bought the new Black Label Society Skullage CD because I like the mellow songs, but it didn’t say neither explicit lyrics or clean and the songs that are explicit are edited. That kind of pissed me off. If it’s clean, clearly mark the god damned cd and say it’s clean regardless of whether it has the black and white warning or not.

That kind of pissed me off. If it’s clean, clearly mark the god damned cd and say it’s clean regardless of whether it has the black and white warning or not.

The thing that pisses me off about Zakk Wylde is that it seems that he feels a need to make it known that he’s a great guitar player. We all know this. All of his mellow, acoustic songs are awesome, there is no arguing that, but when he takes an electric song and makes it acoustic he feels some need to still play these intricate solos on an acoustic guitar and they end up sounding rather, well, stupid!. Seriously, if we’ve learned anything from all the bands that have done an unplugged session they take the solos in the song and slow them down and make them fit.

On the Skullage CD there are the last three songs that are acoustic live numbers. The ridiculousness of taking an acoustic guitar and playing a shredding solo is just, for lack of better words, retarded. Again, sort of like the solo on In This River. I’ve said it before, but the solo on that song sounds so out of place it makes me want to skip that part of the song. I don’t mean to be a cynical bastard but when you have a song like that you want to hear a solo that is slower and has feeling sort of like a Pink Floyd solo. Although it was written before Dimebag’s death and the solo could, perhaps be considered a shredding tribute to the late great, it still sounds weird.

You know what I would love to hear, is Zakk Wylde do a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man. I don’t know if he’s already done that but I’m sure it would sound amazing. Which reminds me…(you can almost hear it if you listen closely)

Here is the video for my favorite song on the CD, Spoke In The Wheel.

Zakk Wylde commented on Guitar Hero during a recent interview with Live-Metal.net. A lot of people in metal use the “F” word. I spent a while in the military so I am prone to using it quite a bit, but this dude it as if it’s going out of style.

Zakk Wylde commented on Guitar Hero during a recent interview with Live-Metal.net. A lot of people in metal use the “F” word. I spent a while in the military so I am prone to using it quite a bit, but this dude it as if it’s going out of style.

Live-Metal.net: You just mentioned Guitar Hero. What do you think about that game, in general?

Zakk: It’s amazing. I think it’s gonna inspire a whole generation of guitar players. Kids are eventually gonna just, “I’m gonna do it for real. I’m gonna pick up a real guitar and try it.” I think it’s fuckin’ great. You never know, you might get the next fuckin’ Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix or Dimebag popping out of there. It’s like, “Yeah, I used to play Guitar Hero and that’s when I decided I wanted to be a guitar player.” So yeah, I think it’s fuckin’ brilliant. Fuck, half these fuckin’ kids wouldn’t know who these fuckin’ bands are if they wouldn’t have picked that thing up. They wouldn’t know who Jimmy Page is or fuckin’ Tony Iommi — all these brilliant, amazing guitar players — unless they picked that thing up.

Now that he has said that, let me talk about Zakk Wylde and Guitar Hero: World Tour. Guitar Hero: World Tour sucks. A handful of good songs and nothing more. You get to unlock Zakk Wylde and then you can use him to play Linkin Park and all sorts of crap that you could never imagine Zakk Wylde playing. At the end of every song he does this stupid dropping of the guitar, takes a knee, does a hail Mary thing and punches the floor…every-song! It becomes quite annoying. Guitar Hero: World Tour is geared toward everyone else besides metal fans. It was designed to sell to a broader buyer than the first 4 (including Rock The 80’s). I certainly hope Guitar Hero Metallica is much better.

The interview also goes on to talk about a Black Label Best Of. People on Blabbermouth spout off ignorant things about “No Ballads, just metal”. Some of Black Label’s ballads are black labels best songs. I said it before that ballads are metal. Not in the way that they are heavy, but in a way that even the hardest metal fan can appreciate a good ballad in the mix of 12 heavy hitting songs.

However Through The Fire And Flames to me may be a bit too long and overly noodled. I can’t play Eruption or TTFAF and I wouldn’t give either a try. If anything I consider myself a rhythm guitarist and the most complex licks I have probably ever made an effort to learn are the intro to Crazy Train, the beginning of Sweet Child Of Mine and the lead in the beginning of For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Most people knew at least one guy that always showed up when you were trying to jam in a public place and wanted to show off how cool he was by playing Eruption. More power to them for taking the time to learn that song but I just don’t have that kind of patience to bother with that kind of guitar work. Save it for the talent show, buddy. I find it much more fun to just jam out on a bunch of power chords and make some bad ass rhythm lines. I’ve never taken any kind of lessons, learned any type of method and I have a ball doing what I do.

So back to the origin of the article. Like I said, while DragonForces Through The Fire And Flames is a wildly complicated tune and remarkably long enough to make an insomniac grow sleepy with it, it just will never have that same pizzazz that Eruption had and still has. The new 300th edition of Guitar World Magazine has 18…yeah, 18 pages of Through The Fire And Flames transcribed. To me that’s 18 pages that could have been used to transcribe 3 other songs…but I still bought the magazine. However there is a cd with a lot of classic Guitar World videos featuring guitar hero’s like Dave Mustaine, Dimebag Darrell, EVH, Zakk Wylde, Slash and Kerry King. Metallica’s Call Of Kthulu is transcribed as well. The Magazine goes through all 300 issues and summarizes each one. Other than 18 pages of Dragonforce, this is a pretty good issue.

After the typical New Years ritual and the aftermath the next day there is just no way I can listen to the blast beats and distorted guitars of Metal. I have to slow things down for a few hours and soften it up a bit. Here is a list of some bands I like to listen to when I’m hungover.

1. Pink Floyd- The Division Bell has got to be by far the best music to listen to when you want to relax and feel better. Wish You Were Here and Dark Side Of The Moon are great too.

2. Zakk Wylde’s BLS- Anything mellow by Zakk’s Black Label. I’m not a big BLS fan but Zakk knows how to right some good softies.

3. Nirvana- Unplugged in NY. I don’t care who you are or where you’ve been. There is no better unplugged recording than this.

4. Stone Sour- Bother, Through Glass and Zzyxx Rd get thrown in the mix. Corey Taylor can scream his ass off but when he writes an acoustic song it is an amazing thing.

5. Marty Friedman- If you have never experienced Marty Friedman’s solo work I highly suggest getting a copy of Scenes, Introduction, Or True Obsession. Aside from being the best Guitar player Megadeth ever had, Marty is an extraordinary solo artist.

There are many other bands I may listen to when I’m trying to cure a hangover, but these are just a few that come into mind. I hope everyone had a great New Years Eve and a great New Year.
