Im telling you what, Shogun should be in the top 5, Trivium came out with a vengance and showed the world that they can blend old and nu metal. They brought a lot to the table with Shogun and I still cant put that album down.

The biggest problem I have, Jeremy is that I get what I get. I have to buy 98% of the CD's I get to review. I'm not one of the bigger metal sites that has people sending them cds left and right. TRust me, I would love to learn of more "Underground" acts with a good sound because it's mostly underground, mediocre metalcore bands that are flooding the venues right now.

Personally, I listened to Jex Thoth's self-titled debut album a couple times recently, and while it might not be on most people's top tens, I've found it definitely an enjoyable listen... If anyone's interested in that sort of thing, by all means, check it out.

You need to discover more bands.
Not that I don't agree with some of the albums on that list, but seriously... too generic.
There were loads of amazing underground metal albums released this year. I think Arsis & Opeth would be the only 2 from your list that I would hold in a real top 10. I'm even sketchy on the Opeth one, because it wasn't anything spectacular, but I think I would throw it in there for the fact that Mikeal prooved that he IS Opeth and can carry on the band himself.

Back Breaker is a good album but I was sitting here writing this last night with literally about a 3 foot stack of cds in front of me, trying to dissect it and not leave too much out. At the same time I didn't want to make the list too long.

Im surprised Back Breaker from The Showdown didn't make it as like an honorable mention considering you gave it such a good review.

In Flames came out early this year. I've listened to it far more times than Bloodbath. Don't get me wrong, I obviously like Bloodbath, but I've only listened to it a handful of times. Amon Amarth's Twilight' is great...just as good as With Odin ON Our Side...but it's just like WOOOS. Great but not great enough for me to put it up any further on my list.

I hope you're happy, you turned me on to Gojira, Firewind, and The Sword in this past year! Great picks!

Here's to a more metal 2009!!

I overwhelmingly agree with this list...with the exception of #5. How did A Sense of Purpose beat out Amon Amarth AND Bloodbath?
