True Norwegian Black Metal By Peter Beste is a book to be released in May by Vice Books. Beste takes a look into the dark world of Black Metal, documenting this extreme metal Sub-genre and it’s roots. Visit Peterbeste.com for more info.
“In the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called black metal has emerged in Norway. It’s roots stem from a heady blend of horror films, extreme heavy metal music, Satanism, pagan mythology, and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990’s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as a juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society.”

That last picture of the guy in corpse paint and leather walking through the woods pointing ( probably at some cool little bird up in the trees ) is without a doubt the funniest picture I have ever seen. I laughed and laughed. But I will read this book, because ineven though they all look cheesy, I love the sound of the music.
Yeah, I thought that was funny too. Thats Abbath from Immortal, all decked out in corpse paint and everything…just taking a stroll through a mossy forest.
Thank you Peter Beste for this long awaited work of art. I’ve been a part of black metal culture for about 10 years and I am more than eager to see the mysterious essence captured in the appropriate setting of simple black & white photographs. Dark hails from California!
That last image is quite hilarious haha. Although I don’t listen to black metal, I’d actually be very interested in learning more about it.
