What’s The Big Deal About Amon Amarth?
August 15, 2008 by Scott
First impressions about a band can leave a lasting impression and if you don;t like what you hear within the first minute of the song, you have a tendency to write them off as something that you can’t get in to. I do it far too often and cheat myself out of some kick ass music. For example, the title.
I have always hear people talk this and that about how cool Amon Amarth is and I have sampled a cd here and there with no intentions of buying it within the first 30 seconds or so of each song. Sometimes it depends what mood I’m in and what I’m really looking for. So today I went to Best Buy to buy a new DSLR camera because I’m tired of my new Casio already that takes great pictures and is small, but doesn’t get good, crisp, clean zoom pictures. That little casio has kicked some ass at a few concerts already, but I wanted better pictures and to look a little more credible with a better camera. Plus I may offer to take some promo shots of some local bands for free.
Long story short. While I was there I also bought Amon Amarth’s With Oden On Our Side. I decided that there must be something I’m missing and I was right. I’ve been missing out on some really great metal. I’ve only listened to about 6 songs and I’ve been loving every second of it! When they say ‘Oden on our side” do they mean that band with the singer that wears the ass-less chaps in The Decline Of Western Civilization? I’m just saying…

check out the video for “cry of the black birds”. that’s what got me into the band. saw it on headbangers ball a long time ago and really got into that album.
I love it. Can’t wait for their new album
I only just got into Amon Amarth the other day myself… ‘With Oden on Our Side’ is absolutely riff-tastic.
Riff-tastic it is. I don;t know whatr it was about it the first few times I tried listening. Perhaps it was a shitty listening booth at FYE, I don’t know. All I know is that I was there (At Best Buy), I saw it, I said ‘god damnit, there has got to be something about this band I’m missing’
They’ll have another album out in just over a month, “Twilight of the Thunder God”. “With Oden On Our Side” was good (”Asator” being the standout IMO), but check out “Versus The World”. You will NOT forget “Death In Fire” once you hear it.
