Why Do You Hate____________?

January 5, 2008 by Scott

kse.jpgI’m always seeing people saying “this band sucks”, “that band sucks”, so on and so forth without any reason why they hate that band so much. Whether it’s metalcore, hardcore, nu metal whatever, I want to know what drives your hate for some of the bands on this list below. I want to better understand why people are so hateful to bands that I actually like and think are very talented. In return I give some reasons why I hate some of the bands I always bash on here. So Why do you hate:?

Why Do You Hate:…

Killswitch Engage? Sure some of them have kinda cheezy stage antics but the sound is great and diverse…perhaps it’s not evil enough for some metal heads?
Slipknot? Yeah..I know why…because it’s Nu Metal and all Nu Metal Sucks right? I agree that a lot of it does…but I really dig this bands sound. Would it make a difference if they didn’t wear masks and jumpsuits?
Hatebreed? Unless you’re just not into hardcore. Jasta and crew bring it heavy and straight forward.
Divine Heresy? Dino’s new crew has a bit of a FF sound but Do you expect Dino to change the way he plays or the sound of his gear? Besides, FF hasn’t put out a decent album since Demanufacture so why not?
Trivium? Matt Heafy and the boys are amazing talents. I love the guitar work from these guys but was never big on the vocal points until The Crusade. The Crusade was the record that people started calling them “Metallica” clones because Matts vocals kinda sound like a young James Hetfield. I say as long as they don’t sound like a new James-AH Hetfield-AH! then sing on.

Ok, so now it’s my turn…

Him? It’s not so much the music that I hate, it’s the fact that they keep calling it metal and how much Vile acts like a little Diva bitch.
Avenged Sevenfold? Once again it’s because they keep calling this shit metal. These guys don;t know what they want to be. Metal, punk? they just don’t know. They plaster themselves with tats and eyeliner to try to fit an image. I don’t know what the deal is but don’t like it.
Papa Roach? I bought a Papa Roach CD once. $13.99 of my hard earned cash I’ll never get back and 10 minutes of my life that I never want to remember. These guys are the kings of a mediocre single and a shitload of fillers.
Cradle Of Filth? I’m a huge Misfits fan and they did a horrid cover of Halloween on the Underworld 2 soundtrack…and I don’t really like black metal so that pretty much sums it up.
DragonForce? While I feel they are extremely talented, this music annoys the hell out of me.

Throw some other band names in too. Why do you hate _______?

  1. why i hate hawthorne heights and emo kids?

this band apitimized the self loathing cutting crying emo scene, every song they have ever done that i have been forced to hear because of the radio mtv fuse or any other music medium has been sad sappy my girl left me shit, and that is a scene that annoys the hell out of me, for kids with parents that arnet divorced who are too young to face real hardship, who call themselves bisexual becuase they made out with their friend is just stupid why not just fess up that your a pansy and this is your way of trying to get back at the popular kids by forming your own niche, which is fine people do it all the time, but try not to be so damn whiney about it

  2. Metra says:

Why do I hate breaking Benjamin? Because I think their talent is entirely overrated.

  3. Ian says:

I hate blink 182, they are emo but pretend they are punk. Also they stole their logo from nirvana. Moreover, their music is terrible, and yet so many people like them. It’s just sad. I’m a big music fan, and many of my friends who like blink 182 say that if i listen to all their music i would like them, I can honestly say I own all their albums and still hate everything about them.

  4. Greg says:

oooo…. this is so right up my alley. I grew up near the Bay Area Metal Scene, with bands like Testament, Forbidden, even Selloutica. Metal had such a great scene (not talking about glam) and such great people in it. SLayer, Morbid Angel, all these bands had such SOUL and PURPOSE. Sure I might sound sentimental, but real metal is so much more than Hot Topic and MTV.

I do not however, like Killswitch. No soul.

I despise the clowns in Slipknot. THe lyrics are so… so Linkin Park like. So… whiny 14 year old who got grounded and can’t watch wrestling that night.

Hatebreed may have a strong message, but they lack the sound… christ, I don’t need someone screaming that “self-esteem metal” in my ear.

I hate name dropping, as you know any metal thread instantly becomes a silly “I can name more obscure bands than you” fest.

But I really aren’t excited about much new metal these days.

AH!!!! I’m wrong. I want everyone to check out Gojira. I have been amazed by them, and they embody everything great about metal. The complete opposite of Trivium.

Oh, and I’ll end with this… the next karate-mosher I see in the pit is getting knocked out.

  5. frank says:

yea why do I think ALL the above bands suck??? caus they are all corporate sluts. I listen to underground music, mostly. But I wouldnt even say I hate them, more like never listen to them. give me something with some content that makes me think. not Corporate bullshit, with no spine.

  6. Rob says:

I guess we have slightly different tastes in metal. I have to be completely honest, killswitch engages stuff gets old REALLY fast, my mind is far too vast to adjust to their simple redundant sound. If I hear a song from them I’ve never heard before I can tell immediately that it’s them because something lingers over each one of their albums and I can’t stand it. Hatebreed just plain out blows, I can’t get much more specific than that but they lack taste and the whole “hate” and destroy everything thing is way too simple coming from them. I agree with everything else on here however. To me, metal is Graveworm, The Absence, Raunchy, mother fucking Kalmah, Opeth, etc. If I can say anything about any band whatsoever, my word goes to Opeth. If anyone denies the talent and ingenuity of Opeth, then that one has not really listened to all their music nor do they understand amazing sound. Damnation, Ghost Reveries and Morningrise rest my case tenfold.

  7. Bam says:

c’mon KSE are great and Slipknot have matured into a fantastic outfit

personally I wont slate a band until i have given them a whole hearted listening too, but this isnt always the case with everyone. Just the other night i was at a metal club in Bournemouth and got on to discussing music tastes as you do. And this guy was sooo needlessly flagrant about KSE for no reason other than a misguided guess at what they do sound like (in other words rumors of them being shit). Whichever the band in question this really grinds my gears.

Although I have been guilty of this before I am not pleading complete innocence here, but it would be nicer if most of this flaming of bands, mainly attached to a social perception and get on with enjoying music whole heartedly

and just to start a riot… I have listened to Funeral for a Friend and My Chemical Romans and they still suck balls

    :P

  8. Rob says:

oh and for a “why” on a band I hate.. Well i do have respect for MOST bands. So while I kinda talk down Killswitch I do have to admit they’re still talented musicians but don’t exactly fall into the lap of my tastes. And I’d rather listen to them then stuff like Underoath/Autumn to Ashes and all that crybaby shit. I knew a girl who listened to the really whiny high pitched “screamo” garbage and it just stuck like a thorn in my spine till no end. I just picture every single fan with their long hair draped over an eye all barely bobbing their heads like a horde of mindless clones. It’s just really gay, but I’m sure it’s completely the other way around coming from that end of the spectrum about metal. But how many intelligent people actually listen to that emo god awful atrocity of sound? Yeah Killswitch Engage is starting to sound a lot better by the sentence here. I could go on for pages and pages and pages about a hundred bands before I started to slow down. So I’ll just end it here.

  9. Rob says:

Ah and I just have to throw in some more stuff about… I guess.. hardcore? Suicide Silence and I killed the prom queen definitely rubbed my senses the right way. It’s too bad IKTPQ is no more.

    ok ok the end :)

  10. why i hate everything about this fucking lame and pathetic

  11. Scott says:

Wow, what a response! I can actually agree/understand fully with 98% of you.

However, I think a lot of times bands like this get judged on their first record and that is where the dislike stems. Every album there after is ignored and hated. Every band on my list has changed drastically since their first record. BUT there are some bands that take a change for the worse (CoughmetallicaCough) and change so much that they get hated from that. Anyway, this was a good understanding experiment for me. These were just a few bands that I always see people bashing and I wonder why. Now I kinda understand.

  12. Izzy says:

I must be the only person here who doesn’t hate Slipknot ( well me and the million others who made their album the highest selling extreme almost death metal album ever ). I think they can ( when they are not all acking stupid and actually paying attention to what they are playing ) produce one hell of a monster groove.
I don’t hate Dragonforce. There is no better cure for insomnia.
I do hate the current bunch of new punk/emo that is littering the airwaves. I find it all sounds almost exactly the same. There is no substance to it.
I hate it when people hate a band for ” selling out “. That is just stupid (as I believe you haved mentioned in a previous blog Scott). Nobody is in a band because they never want to be popular. Those who tell you they won’t listen to something because now everyone else is listening to are are just being stupid.
I don’t hate Metallica. To me, they never sold out. People, mature, their attitudes and ideas change and it is reflected in their music. However, I do hate Reload and some of the songs on Load. They seem forced, as if they needed to fill the album so let’s come up with some second rate songs that we will never play live so it doesn’t matter. And I really hate the sound of St. Anger. What is with the snare drum that sounds like a cardboard box? That irritates me.
Finally I hate most of the newer metal out today. I realize music goes through trends, where the current crop shares some similarities, but everything sounds alike now. The screamed vocals, the heavy breakdowns, limitied solos, nothing stands out. Nothing currently coming out really grabs me.

  13. Scott says:

I can;t honestly say that I “Hate” Metallica either. Otherwise I wouls stop listening to them all together. I dow however hate what they are doing these days.

There are few bands these days that produce really good solos. A few of those bands are Shadows Fall, All that remains and Megadeth (Dave still knows how to rip them).

I can understand why some don’t like Hatebreed. But if you read up on Jamie Jasta on Supremacy you can better understand the record. Plus this is great music to work out to.

As far as killswitch goes, I can also understand why some people might find them redundant. Sometimes i get tired of them too. Thats when you change cds and put on something different.

Slipknot’s first CD probably ruined it for a lot of people. They got tired of he “angry 14 year old” lyrics. These days it’s evolved and developed into a biger and better thing. But all around if you look into it all metal songs are about the same things in life.

Now all that other shit breaking benjamin, blink 182, emo and all that…well no shit, i think we can all agree on that.

  14. Paul Raven says:

I’m kind of tired of hating bands, really. It was a big thing for me when I was younger, because when you’re young you want to place yourself in an identity sphere, and it’s easier to do so by defining what you *aren’t* than by what you *are*. There’s nothing wrong with that – totally natural phenomenon, even if it looks incomprehensible from the outside.

So while there’s a lot of music I actively avoid (like the limp eighties retro stuff that the UK charts are full of, for example, or the identikit haircut hardcore bands), I can’t be bothered to *hate* it. Life’s too short – and there’s too much good music that deserves my emotional attention instead. Maybe this makes me sound “un-metal”, but I can live with that.

Quality is subjective. I’d rather listen to howling dogs than Blink182, but there’s got to be something to it – otherwise we wouldn’t be having this discussion, right? ;)

  15. Scott says:

    Well said, Paul!

  16. Oscar says:

I love Slipknot and Divine Heresy, I think they’re awesome bands. And I think that KsE can get a bit old fast, and Hatebreed just sound really boring. Trivium have annoying singing, like he’s trying to scream and sing at the same time. One band I hate is Gallows, it’s punk crap and just doesn’t sound good.

  17. Paul Raven says:

Gallows aren’t so much bad as they are massively over-rated (or is that over-marketed?) …

  18. Axl Plamondon says:

What gets me is the beat of the music and the sound quality and clarity also, but MOSTly I have to like the lyrics and the vocals, so songs should definately have different ideas and meanings to them, some bands that I like have to work on that. But I still give them the benefit of the doubt.

I do NOT like the vocals of Dragon Force, but their music is quite good. I never liked System of a Down, but I know sooo many people who did, the vocals ruined it all for me, they annoyed me. I don’t like any kind of “pig squealing” vocals like in Atreyu, but the singing is good. I don’t like Cradle of Filth at ALL, the Black Metal does not interest me at all, and especially them, they are so fucking…strange, and Deicide also have AMAZING music, it is so heavy, but the vocals and the message are just fucked from my understanding.

The bands Hatebreed, Slipknot, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, They are all some of the bands that I have listened to for the last few years and I have liked them all, but they do need to try some new things, (Killswitch, Hatebreed). Slipknot has changed a lot for the better I think, their music may not be as heavy, but it sounds better now. Trivium, I love their music, but I think the vocals are better only when he sings.
I got to watch AND meet Divine Heresy, I think they are one of the best bands to come around in a LONG time!!

I like to listen to bands that at least have different sounds from one another like Lamb of God, DevilDriver, Divine Heresy, Chimaira, Ill Nino, Soilwork, Fear Factory (’Transgression’ album was VERY dissapointing though) Arch Enemy (chicks who rock out deserve so much credit cuz there are not many) Same with In This Moment, um.. Machine Head have really great music, the vocals are questionable but good. So it is quite obvious that I like the new aggressive music, but I have to pay my due respects to all of the classics like Pantera and Metallica who paved the road for my favourites. If it weren’t for them, my bands wouldn’t exsist!!!

I think I wrote quite enough for now. That’s my opinon

  19. KevinC says:

Yea, I’ve stopped “hating” certain bands. There really is no point or need to hate on a band. I mean, if there’s a band I don’t like, I’ll just not listen to them. But I won’t go out of my way and let people know my dislike of them because chances are…they won’t care, and it’s all just personal preference.

  20. Derek says:

    Why Do You Hate Hardcore?

Well, musically its beginner’s material. If i had known hardcore existed i probably would have started learning that instead of green day, nirvana and foo fighters. And with bands such as Dethklok, Trivium, Arch Enemy, Into Eternity, Powerglove and Slayer in my itunes the redundancy of their musical format doesnt appeal to me. (I know Dethklok isn’t technically a real band, but the tunes are great).

Though there was a time i was into hardcore music, i grew out of that when i started listening to Iron Maiden. It wasn’t as bad then because it was what it was. But whomever decided he needed the bassist to wail at full nasal range in the chorus needs to be shot. Do the bands listen to their album after they record it? No, your bassist/drummer/guitarist can’t sing. maybe he can but if his voice is getting nasaly and whiny then he’s definitely singing out of his comfortable range. We let them think they can sing by buying their albums.

Drums, I don’t have a big issue there. Stop singing. They seem to lack the ability to mix up their playing but that may be the fault of the…

Guitars. Really. “DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN” is the best you can come up with? My fecal matter has more creative thought than this overused riff. In fact, I have a hard time telling when one song ends and another begins unless they tell me so. But let’s not forget the A or D and even sometimes G string that they play a note between “DUN DUN”s. Forget the B and E string though. Who needs them anyway? Whichever guitarist thought that it would be a good idea to create a chord (If it can be called that) that creates such a horrible sound that it makes me want to punch babies? I heard it in one song and I thought “Well that was kind of interesting” but, since then I’ve heard it everywhere. And another tip to you hardcore guitarists out there. Octaves are cool, in severe moderation. Their riffs are oversaturated with octaves and it drives me nuts because i cant play an octave without jamming myself in the eye with my tremolo arm.

Bass, you’re mixed out. But please stop singing.

Synthesizers, Please make techno in your basement. You’re never heard unless on the album (unless you’re Dimmu Borgir, then that’s all I can hear). You must also stop singing.

Lead Singer, you must develop more than 2 screams. For the love of all that is holy, learn more than 2 screams. When I did vocals I had a multitude of screams. Some better than others but, I was working on them. Just practice more.

And tot he fans of hardcore music….all I’ll say is that Hitler had the right idea, just targeted the wrong people. (What The FUCK is up with hardcore kids dressing like wiggers? I think they’ve lost their goddamn minds.)

  21. Metal Martyr says:

Wow, that was a mouthful, Derek. But good points, especially on the back up vox that just don’t cut it. Hardcore to me is something that HAS to be listened to in great moderation, otherwise it does all start to sound the same. Certain death metal bands can be the same way and this newer blackened death metal might start to become that way as well, with the long drawn out yawning screams and such.

  22. Phil says:

Why I hate all these bands:
They substitue playing a guitar really fast with being good at the guitar. Dragonforce especially, not only to they play some of the most ridiculous pieces they SPEED UP THEIR MUSIC (thats not talent). As for the others, i will say i have not listened to much, but from what i have all the lyrics seem to be about the singer being really really angry about something. I suppose if you are into crappy fast guitar playing and guys yellin about something you may like this, but to me its all ugh…

  23. mark says:

All I can say is like what you like and leave all the other alone. Different people have different opinions and standards. I, for example, love the whole metalcore thing. Some people hate it, but it doesnt bother me when someone doesn’t like a band I’m into. I was showing a guy a couple of Darkest Hour songs and he just went on and on how he doesn’t like their sound. So what. I paid for the music not you. If you don’t like it don’t listen. Of course some bands are just so bad ass I have yet to find someone who doesn’t like at least some aspect of the music:UNEARTH,WAR OF AGES, and A PERFECT MURDER to name a few. I hope someday we can all just stop arguing about what good music is. Music is music. Some will like it some won’t. Don’t get your feelings hurt. I don’t like rap or country or tejano, but I don’t go and make a website devoted to how much I dislike the genres. To sum it all up. TO EACH HIS OWN.

  24. Andy says:

I hate Slipknot…for the same reason I hate most bands. They’re a gimmick. They’re not genuine; they’re not raw. Or if they are genuine, they’re authentic suck. Like, Kiss was a gimmick, yeah, but the reason they don’t suck is because they never pretended to be anything else. Whereas bands like Slipknot are just spoiled sniveling misogynistic dorks pretending to be “hard”.

Another band that I hate is Muse. There’s just nothing to them. Nothing below the surface of the band. I want the real thing — not “what’s cool”. Because that’s not cool. It’s an empty facade.

  25. itsalljustaride says:

I guess I’ll just pick one here:

Slipknot – It isn’t so much that I “hate” them. They have songs that I really like, but I think they’re so terribly overrated it isn’t even funny. There is nothing new or groundbreaking about them. Even when they first came out, they caught the tail end of the “nu metal” craze, and everything they were about had basically been done already, just not in the same combination. Also, a big problem I have with them is the fact that most of their songs seem to cater to 15 year olds. These guys are mature adults but they’re writing songs about how no one understands them, or how the world isn’t giving them a fair shake, etc. Please, that stuff may seem genuine to adolescents, but when you grow up it just rings hollow, and seems like whiny suburban white-kid angst. Slipknot has made bank and are living real nice now, all because they make aggro rural kids feel like their petty juvenile problems are the most important thing in the world.

Metal had a brief honeymoon in the late 90’s, but it’s been so commercialized now it isn’t funny. The emo-screamo-punk-pop phase just proves it. When all the rich kids down the block start dressing in tight jeans and wearing studs and dying their hair black, well, you know the subculture just took a nose dive. I blame Guitar Hero, damn it.

  26. itsalljustaride says:

Also, I feel compelled to add, I don’t think Slipknot has changed for the better, as some others have said on here (of course that’s my opinion, yadda yadda).

The newer softer stuff just doesn’t sound good. They’re “not doing it right”, I guess is the feeling I get. It sounds like they’re doing it out of some kind of obligation to not be so heavy all the time, or because Corey thinks it will make him seem like a more rounded singer (not that it isn’t true. the Stone Sour stuff was pretty good).

I saw them at the *Gratuitous Commercial Product Sponsor* Tour this summer, and they’re set was really energetic and cool for the first couple songs, then it just got boring watching the clown guy bang on some kegs with a sledgehammer every other measure. God, he didn’t even look like he was enjoying himself, and how can you not love hitting stuff!

Beyond that, the stuff that is still heavy on their albums is so formulaic I can’t listen to it. “DUN DUN, DUN DUNDUN WEEEEEEEEE, DUN DUN, DUN DUN WUUUUR”. Those chug-chug guitar riffs are just so annoying anymore, like the guy above said. How much creativity does it take to put your palm on a drop-d tuned string and hit some muted 16th notes? Lordy.

  27. Metal Martyr says:

Andy? KISS Never pretended to be anything else? They tried the disco route for crying out loud. Terrible example of a band and a gimmick because they try to sell the gimmick more than anyone else. They don;t even try to be creative anymore.

Sure some of the Slipknot stuff can sound redundant, especially on their latest album. I still think they have progressed but as far as formulaic goes, that’s their sound, so if you don’t like them for that then that’s a good reason. Most people just hate them and don’t have a good, solid reason.

  28. itsalljustaride says:

“They don;t even try to be creative anymore.”

Add to that the immense ego of the biggest prick in the world, Gene Simmons, and, well, KISS just sucks now.

I do still have a nostalgic affinity for them just because my dad was a huge fan, but, meh.

  29. Sir Uhn-tiss says:

I listen to alot of music. I dont listen to the radio, MTV, or anything like that i hear my friends say “Oh this band sucks, or that band bites ass.” Whenever i hear them diss a band that i havent heard of i go and reseach the band. Coheed and Cambria. Wow, the first time i heard them all i could was say turn that shit off. But as many people that i hear saying they love them i had to figure out why. So i forced myslef to listen to them and eventually warmed up to them. There music is mediocre but there vocals are a little to high pitched for my taste. And All That Remains have been a fav band of mine since the first time i hear This calling and i thoughorly enjoy there music. And anything old school will get a thumbs up from me. But i have to say that linkin park sold out. minutes to midnite was WAY to emo for there usual sound. Emo kids i dont get…You cry and cut yourself because people pick on you for what you do and what you wear…so dont fucking do it. And anytime some one mentions metal why does it have to be a pissing contest to see who can hate a band that the other either loves or has never heard of??? and besides metal chicks are the best in bed…..
